This chilly abstract was created from an Apophysis fractal turned into a six-pointed kaleidoscope. The design is overlaid with a silver-framed snowflake with inlaid deep blue, purple, and lavender set with round soft pink gems and accented with a deep pink jewel in the center. The whole piece gives the effect of a soft, snowy light shining through a the black and midnight blue of a dark winter night.

Cold Starlight

I originally made this nice chilly abstract to start out 2012.

In the background is a quiet medieval city street in late afternoon, the warm glow of the setting sun enhanced by the lamps burning along the walls. Half-timbered houses and inns with thatched roofs line the street, and behind them is visible against the sky a tall, square tower with four corner turrets. This large-scale scene merges into a smaller foreground still life showing a desk littered with books. The books are as tall as the stone wall and houses they lean against, and the cobblestone street fades smoothly into the wood grain of the table. In addition to the books there sits on the desk a feather pen and ink bottle, a compass, an hourglass, a mounted magnifying glass, and a parchment letter with an official seal. Two candles light the desk with a soft glow as the lamps light the street.

Ancient Horizons

This was inspired by M.C. Escher's Still Life and Street, with a medieval twist.

A 3D fantasy landscape full of shimmering snow and magical fairy lights. A row of silvery shining lamps lights the trail through a snowy mountain pass hemmed in by steep rocky cliffs. The sparkling snow-covered path is hemmed in by dark fir trees. On the far side of the cleft a translucent glowing fairy castle awaits the enchanted traveler on his journey to fairyland.

Pass of Light

A fantasy winter landscape created in Vue. I wanted a winter scene that focused mainly on the landscape but was obviously fantasy. This was also an experiment in working with snow, getting it to sparkle and reflect the light for an “other-worldly” effect. It was an extremely long render on account of all the lights and reflective and translucent surfaces, but I was able to just run it in stops and starts over about a month.

Ascent in Chains

There are probably several philosophical interpretations for this, but I didn't have any particular one in mind.

A digital stained-glass design in the Art Deco style popular in the 20th century. The widely-used sunburst motif is central, rising behind a green landscape balanced by a tree on one side and clouds and flowers on the other. Geometric shapes are used to emphasize the symmetry of the scene, with both the tree and clouds made of overlapping circles. Various brightly colored fractals give the 'glass' texture and interest. The scene is framed in black ironwork and diamond-shaped blocks frosted with dark but vivid fractal patterns.

Canticle of the Sun

This design is in the Art Deco style popular in the early 1900s. I came across a lot of stained-glass designs in my researches, so I decided to try one with the popular sun motif. I had fun picking textures from various Apophysis and Xaos renders, some of which have been sitting on my computer for months or even years. There are bits of Eyes of the Storms, Waltz of the Snowflakes, and Chaos Tie-Dyed in there, as well as others that have never seen the light of day.
